Nasze Miśki - O1T from Romania
best_x_treme - 10-10-2021, 20:29 Temat postu: O1T from Romania Hi all,
Since a few days ago I'm the (un) happy owner of a O1T. I've bought the car online from abroad, so no test drive before buying . Definitely not the recommended way, but I took the risk. Is a German car with 158.000 kilometres. Looks pretty good and not much rust (or at least that I think). I definetly wanted one with little rust, this was my main criteria. I missed a few deals on others cars before this one, so I thought this will be a good buy with my "experience" in O1T area.

And now the problem that I have. When the car arrived, looked as I expected, no surprises here, but at the first test drive, I've noticed the engine was quite loud, in high RPM it sound like a rocket. After a few kilometres, when I opened the hood, from under exhaust manifold heat shield I saw a little smoke coming out. I knew about cracking exhaust manifold... so today i removed the heat shield. For now I can't see any crack in the manifold, but I have noticed that in left part (cilinder 1) the manifold is definetly more distanced from the engine. So I'm thinking to order a new set of gaskets for now and hope no more surprises when I remove the manifold.
So, what do you think guys? About the car and the exhaust problem. I'm counting on your help to keep this thing running, here in Romania people are brainwashed with german cars myths, so little knowledge abou Japan cars.
Best regards from Piatra Neamt (Romania) ,
Constantin

Hello Friend.
I am glad that you finally managed to buy your dream car. You can see signs of tampering with the exhaust manifold. I bet the job wasn't done properly. I think you need to dump the exhaust manifold and process it through planning. Then be sure to put it on the original gasket number: MR323654. No other seals work. If necessary, take care of new pins and nuts. That should silence the rocket
Take care!

Thanks Bzyk, the car is nice and I hope I'll manage to resolve soon the manifold issue and have it registered. Great advice with planning the monifold, I'll check that too and I will replace the studs and nuts too. I'll post update about the rocket modification , I hope for a safe landing.

Sold my ex car at the end of last week, a Golf 4 GTI 1.8T. It was a reliable car and fun enough to drive, hope the O1T will not disapoint in this regard.
I've passed the car technical check with the O1T and should be able to register her this week. Also I got new tires, Michelin Crossclimate +, these are all seasons, hope will be fine, anyway I'm not planning to use the car in extreme winter conditions .

it will - I'm using same crossclimate since 3 years (on 2 cars) and my opinion is that there's no difference on snow between them and specific winter tyres

Why not Crossclimate 2? As per various tests they are much better than Crossclimate +.

The new ones are a little better as performance, especially on snow, but you'll do less kilometres with them (35K for 2 vs more than 50K with +). I will use them mostly on summer, so not a significant difference here. Also, it was a 100 euro more for the full set to get the Crossclimate 2.
PS thanks for replying in "timing - balance shaft" issue I have , I will deal with that soon.

Finally managed to register the car, got an appropriate car registration number

After changing of timing belt and correcting the balance shaft, the car drives pretty good
These days I've changed the sparks too. I've put the evo sparks, NGK 3106, as I saw recommended here on forum.
The car had some cheap Denso w20tt sparks, I don't think these were recommended for this car. Anyway, they were looking good and the car was working fine with them.
P.S. The cats seem to love the hot intercooler:

Świece jak nowe. Mam nadzieję że nowe NGK są produkcji Japońskiej. A kot to się prosi o kłopoty.

The sparks are made in Japan. I've bought them in a store, for around 15 euro/piece. It seems there are some fakes NGKs, so I would't recommend buy them from sites like ebay.
I've connected my cheap (fake ) OBD II interface. Surprise, no fault codes stored... so far, so good . What app do you use? Torque pro? or lite (free version) is enough?

For basic porpose the "lite" version will do the job, but I strongly recomend to buy pro.
