Ladies and gents,
I bought my car few days ago and was reading mostly very good comments about the engine. I already left it to my mechanic for a general look and filters/oil change and possible shock replacment. It has 117k km on the clock. I have got a few questions
First, I used to own a Diesel Fluence with electric steering and as you may know most of Reno cars have really light steering wheel- maybe even too much. When I took the Lancer, especially when the car is standstill, it is tough to move the steering, I mean it needs you to use your power. Should it be feeling light or do I feel like that after driving Fluence for few years?
The second thing is about the valve clearance, it says that it should be done every 40-50 km, is this a necessity to do it this often really? That might be an expensive service item.
Anything that I should be aware of or take into consideration during yearly maintenance? |

Hi,
the steering of Lancer is relatively tough but I liked it. It is IMO much better than in ASX - it was so strange to me, to steer such a big car with nearly one finger.
I would not say that there is a necessity to check valve clearance each 40-50kkm.
I checked it 3 times in 10 years (170kkm) (paid ca. 100 euro for each service in Poland) and there was never, ever any problem with time chain or with valve clearance.
Lancer is a very robust car.. If it is not too late, protect the underbody of your car, because it is the weakest point of this car. |

Thanks for the answer!
My Reno had electric steering so it was feeling weird at the beginning when I took Lancer but after few weeks I got used to it. The handling on higher speeds is quite good as well. I wanted a car with an engine without any turbo, direct injection and so on. The performance of the engine is also quite good and enough for me. Only burden is on highway speeds, there is too much engine noise as there is no 6th gear.
my car is at 117000 km, i had a thorough service after I bought it. All brake discs, pads, all liquids, oils (including gearbox oil) and front shocks have been changed.
I was reading about timing chain problems in the forum last week, it does not seem like it is widespread but i think i will replace timing chain and related parts end of this year, just to have peace of mind. However, the parts are so expensive here in Poland, i think i will order from Amayama, it seems to be 30-40 percent cheaper
With the underbody, do you mean the rust? I checked it already, there is no rust except for exhaust ( slightly rusted i believe it is normal) is there some additional protection you suggest for the rust? |

No problem.
I think this surely was an issue in the year of production 2010. I would not sell Lancer if it would be still in a good condition regarding oxidation of underbody. If you do not have any spots of oxidation then it is already good but I would strongly suggest to protect the underbody. This car is a very robust one, and the only thing that basically is a real issue is rust.
I would just have fun with driving a car rather than listening for some potential problems. I drove with my Lancer 177kkm (ca. 105kmiles) and I did not have to do anything with the car exept from oil service, replacing brake discs etc.
If you want to invest some money in the car then you can replace it, but I think it does not make sense with such a small milage. I would check it but replace it if there is a need for that.

After your rust topic, I went under the car and checked again. I see some points rusted, especially around rear axle. nothing fearful on chassis but needs to be taken care of. Last time i was checking when I was changing tires in some place but focused on the front.
Looks like it would be good idea to take it somwhere and clean all chassis and put rust protection

Long time I did not write. So during this time, in April/May I had the subframe cleaned and applied Noxudol in some workshop in Krakow.
-The valve clearances were checked, they were okay.
-The timing chain and the tensioner both okay, no stretching. I have now 125k km.
Problems apart from rust
-There was squeaking sound from rear wheels area when I accelerated ( used to disappear when I applied brakes) It turned out to be from brake caliper pins, they were loose and the caliper was coming into contact with the disc. I was told by two mechanics they saw the same problem few more times.
- The paint peels off so easily. I have lots of small scratches everywhere, it is so annoying. If I paint the car it would look so beautiful (red sedan) but I am not sure if the rust stops or not so I do not invest more.
Apart from those, I like the car so much. no turbo, no direct injection, proper performance.
It burns a little petrol but it is normal for this engine. Around 11 lt/100 km in city, 7-8 intercity.

And one more additional problem that I forgot to add
Sometimes it does not want to go into any gear when the car is on a stop. You have to pump the clutch peda a few times so after that you can put it into any gear. Not sue if it is master cylinder or clutch or it is kind of widespread issue. |
